• This is how it works:

    • The IU-8 chooses approximately 40 books that the team members must read on their own time. The books for the 5th and 6th grade team are on a special shelf in the elementary library. Each team member need not read all the books; just so every book gets read by two or three students.
    • I will inquire about interest in participation and get a team together about 12 weeks before a competition. Those who are selected are expected to read at least 5 or 6 books thoroughly. Most of the books are written on a 4th grade reading level (a few are 3rd and a few are 5th), so this should not be too difficult.
    • As a teammember reads each book, he or she is required to come up with at least 10 questions and answers about the story. (Pretend that you are a teacher and make up a quiz about details in the book!) Write them on the Q and A paper that will be given to you, and I will keep them in a binder. We will use these to prep for the competition.
    • The teams will meet every Thursday at around 8:00 a.m. for about ten minutes in the library. Additionally, we will have two after school meetings before the competition from 3:30 till 5:00. We will meet along with the 7th and 8th grade team. We will announce the dates for those closer to competition time. You will need to bring a white shirt to decorate to one of the after school meetings.
    • At the actual competition, you will compete in three separate rounds against three other school teams who have also read the same books. There will be 40 questions asked, 20 to each team. The object is to answer the most questions you can correctly, by getiing the ones asked of your team as well as correctly answering questions directed at the other team if they answer incorectly.
    • You will need money for dinner on competition day; we usually stop at the Galleria mall in Richland to eat at the food court on the way.
    • You will receive a certificate of participation.
    • If you are on the team in the fall, you are not automatically on the team for the spring competition – they are separate events.
    • If you choose to be on the team, you need to commit to read, read, read ( a minimum of 6 books per competition) and have fun, fun, fun!
