Welcome to Berlin Brothersvalley Elementary School, home of the “Lil Mountaineers”. Our elementary school takes great pride in its reputation for academic and character greatness. We instill in our students a sense of pride in their achievements, their school and in their community. Leading this effort are 40 highly qualified teachers and support staff. Berlin Elementary educates students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. Our curriculum is aligned with PA state standards and guided by our full time K-8 curriculum coach. Another thing we take great pride in is our reputation for addressing the needs of special needs children. We have two learning support teachers, a life skills teacher and two autistic support teachers. Our school houses not only a life skills classroom, but a specially designed respite room where children with special needs can have their sensory needs addressed. Our curriculum coach leads weekly meetings with all teachers to address student concerns, monitors student performance and offers suggestions for curriculum improvements. Recognizing that the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are essential to the United States’ future success, we are also fortunate enough to have an elementary science coordinator who ensures that our children K-6 are educated in these important fields in a fun and engaging way. In the area of language arts, a key component to our success is the use of the Slingerland Multisensory Teaching Method. The Slingerland method of teaching uses a multisensory approach that teaches the children techniques to achieve success in the areas of reading, writing, spelling and speaking. Believing that the character of children is just as important for future success, we utilize several programs that help children develop the character traits of kindness, respect, and stress the importance of making good choices even at this young age. Lions Quest Skills for Growing is a program taught in grades K-4 that emphasizes the importance of cooperation, respect for others and respect for oneself. The Olweus Bullying program teaches our students not only how to treat others, but encourages students to take a stand in preventing bullying. Our “Mighty Mountaineer Program” is a school wide positive behavior improvement program that rewards students who demonstrate exemplary character. Lastly, our “student of the week” program identifies one student from each classroom each week that has led the class by example in effort, helpfulness, and respect for others. We are extremely proud of our “Mountaineer Nation”. This is only possible due to the tremendous support of our parents and community members. Their desire for a bright future for their children makes all the difference.
