Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Jill Shubik
I am Jill Shubik and I am a high school English teacher at Berlin Brothersvalley School District. I earned my bachelor's degree in Secondary English Education in 2007 at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Shortly after, I got hired at Berlin as a 7-12 English teacher. I currently teach English 10, Career Prep English 11, as well as an elective poetry class. I am also the sophomore class advisor.
My goal as a teacher is to make my students passionate about reading and writing. I want them to let the words that they read this year inspire them. I think it is very important to make real life connections to the literature that is being read. I also believe that there is a strong connection between reading and writing. It is vital that my students read deeply and widely so that they may grow as writers and are able to communicate effectively after high school. I truly enjoy reading written works created by my students. I love teaching American literature and poetry.
The novels that English 10 students will read this year are:
-Fahrenheit-451, Ray Bradbury
-To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee
-All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque
-The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway
-The Pearl, John Steinbeck
-Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck
-Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare
-I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou
I feel very lucky to teach such wonderful students who are kind and hardworking. I am proud to be a mountaineer and to be a part of this great district.
In my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughter, cheering on Pittsburgh sports teams, and taking trips to the beach. I also enjoy supporting the Berlin Mountaineer athletic teams and I absolutely love Friday night football. Go Mountaineers!
