Dear Third Grade Families,
It is hard to believe that we have already completed our first week of third grade! We have been learning many things and growing as a third-grade team. We want to have a great year, so it is important that each member of our team give their best effort daily; in our work, our words, and our actions.
Each third grader is responsible for behaving in a manner that is age appropriate. This means participating in class, following directions, being attentive, respectful, and kind, using good manners, and walking quietly in the halls. Students should treat others the way they want to be treated, but not just toward their peers. Students are expected to treat EVERYONE IN OUR SCHOOL with kindness, empathy, and compassion. Disrespect and rudeness WILL NOT be tolerated. EVERYONE wants this year to be the VERY BEST!
At the beginning of each month your child will be given a small paper with four mountaineers pictured on it. Your child’s monthly MOUNTAINEERS will be kept in a paper pocket in their agenda. Mountaineers should stay in this pocket and not be taken out at home. At the end of EACH MONTH a grade level Mountaineer Reward will be held, sponsored by our generous PTSO. Each missing mountaineer will result in your third grader missing a portion of the monthly reward. Students that lose all four mountaineers will not participate in the reward.
No one is perfect, and there are times when we all make poor choices. When student behavior does not reflect third grade expectations, BEFORE your child loses a mountaineer, they will be given a “Handle with Care” card by a classroom teacher. This card will serve as a reminder to your child to think about their choices “CARE”-fully and correct their own behavior for the rest of the day. This card will also let your child’s other teachers recognize that they are experiencing a difficult day and may need encouragement to improve their conduct. If the student continues to make poor choices, a check mark will be made on their “Handle with Care” card. Once a student has two check marks on their card, they will lose a Mountaineer. If your child receives a “Handle with Care” card, they will be instructed to take it home and discuss with an adult at home what happened at school during the day. Reflecting with your child about their day at school will allow us all to work together for better days ahead! Third grade teachers operate under the philosophy “Every day is a new beginning, a fresh start.” Handle with Care cards do not carry over day to day. The past is over, we are looking ahead.
At the end of EACH WEEK, on FRIDAY, any student that has not lost any MOUNTAINEERS during that week will get to participate in “Freebie Friday”, a fun activity or opportunity that will be held at the end of the day, EACH WEEK ! It is so important to recognize the efforts of everyone trying their best to make this year the BEST YEAR YET!
